As a Software Engineer in the ONTAP Scale Out Networking Team, you will work as part of a team responsible for the development, testing and sustaining of a key component of the NetApp data management portfolio. As part of the Research and Development function, the overall focus of the group is on competitive market and customer requirements, supportability, technology advances, product quality, product cost and time-to-market. Software engineers focus on enhancements to existing products as well as new product development.

This position requires an individual to be creative, enthusiastic, team-oriented, technology savvy, driven to produce results and demonstrate leadership.

 

Essential Functions:

- Be part of a software development team doing product design, documentation, development, validation and sustaining of ONTAP networking components 

- Lead and participate in technical discussions within the team and with other groups across Business Units associated with evaluating and executing design and development plans for products

- Work on additional tasks and responsibilities that will contribute towards team, department, and company goals

 

Job Requirements

- A strong understanding of concepts related to computer architecture, data structures and programming practices

- Experience in systems programing, multi-threaded & multi process environments.

- Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols, routing, switching, VLAN, LACP, STP, Multicast, QoS, firewalls.
- Excellent C/C++ programming skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential
- Strong aptitude for learning new technologies
- Resourceful in applying creative ideas to solve problems

- Good understanding of software development best practices, tools, technologies and processes.

- Experience in virtual and cloud environments is a plus (AWS, Azure, KVM, etc…)

- Work collaboratively within a team environment of other engineers to meet aggressive goals and high quality standards. Possesses sufficient technical knowledge and experience to pick up new expertise quickly with guidance from a technical leader
 

Responsibility and Interaction:

- Responsible for non-routine and unstructured tasks, requiring creative solutions with more interdependencies and with processes that are less defined

- The individual works on complex problems with partially defined, larger scope

- May work with teams across the company in problem solving and design efforts

- The individual will begin to develop a technical specialty

 

Interaction:

- Work effectively with staff to senior manager level employees within the function and the technical team on assigned projects. There may be communication with employees in other functions within Business Units as required

- Work independently

- Successfully convey information to stakeholders at many levels related to the position

- Participate as a proactive contributor and subject matter expert on team projects

Education

Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
