Job Summary

As a Database Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for keeping database systems up and running that support all Cloud Data Services and other production systems running smoothly 24/7/365. You’ll engage in and improve the lifecycle of cloud services databases from all the aspects. DBREs are a blend of database engineering and administration gearheads that apply sound engineering principles, operational discipline and automation, specializing in databases (SQL/NoSQL i.e. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis etc ). In that capacity, DBREs are peers to SREs and bring database expertise to the SRE teams as well as engineering teams.

Job Requirements:

  • Work on database reliability and performance aspects.
  • Analyze solutions and implement best practices for Cloud Data Services Databases and its components.
  • Work on observability of relevant database metrics and make sure we reach our database objectives.
  • Work with peer SREs to roll out changes to our production environment and help mitigate database-related production incidents.
  • OnCall support on rotation with the team.
  • Provide database expertise to engineering teams (e.g. reviews of database migrations, queries and performance optimizations).
  • Work on automation of database infrastructure and help engineering succeed by providing self-service tools.
  • Plan the growth and manage the capacity of database infrastructure.
  • Design, build and maintain core database infrastructure pieces that allow Cloud Data Services to scale to assist hundreds of thousands of concurrent users.
  • Support and debug database production issues across services and levels of the stack.
  • Make monitoring and alerting alert on symptoms and SLOs.
  • You will have direct influence on the decisions and outcomes related to solution implementation.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to other teams on database and database-related application design methodologies, system resources, application tuning.
  • Review database related changes from engineering teams (e.g.  database migrations).

Job Requirements

Technical Requirements:

 

  • 8+ years of experience supporting distributed database infrastructure on on-premise servers or in the Cloud.
  • In-depth experience of PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB
  • Proficiency in developing solutions to observe, monitor, and diagnose SQL/NoSQL databases and their infrastructure
  • Proficiency with Shell scripting, Python, or similar languages
  • Experience in tuning database performance, including tuning OS (Linux/Unix) and JVM
  • Experience in deploying stateful services on Kubernetes will be a plus
  • Exposure to DevOps tools, processes, and culture
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results on time with high quality
  • Ability to independently learn new technologies
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across multiple business and technical teams
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

Education

You are generally curious and highly motivated with a passion for ensuring scalable, performant and highly-available solutions. You are great at and love debugging and solving technical problems throughout a technology stack. Have a mindset that if you must do the same thing twice, you’re going to automate it! Familiarity with Linux and Windows operating systems. The ability to write automation and understanding of a least one language such as:  Bash, Python, Ansible, Go. A basic understanding of public cloud vendors such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or others. You have the ability to communicate complex technical issues to customers, management, and leadership.  

Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience.
