Job Summary

NetApp is seeking a Technical Director of Software Engineering encompassing our entire Cloud Native engineering program. This program is responsible for delivering cloud native technologies from NetApp including: Trident, our popular open source storage orchestrator; Project Astra, our recently announced application-focused service for Kubernetes workloads; as well as our contributions to the cloud native community and our leadership position within it. This role reports directly to the Director of Engineering for cloud native technologies.

As the most senior individual contributor in this program, you provide strong leadership and a broad consultative role, driving product and service development and strategy in partnership with other engineering leaders and product management across the business. You are also hands on, directly involved in the design and development of the program's products and services, with enough regularity and depth to be able to effectively champion and assure their technical direction.

Beyond engineering, you work directly with multiple functions internal to the organization, including support, site reliability, and security, the field, and others. You also regularly work directly with constituents outside of the company, including the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, cloud native communities like Kubernetes, our customers, partners, press & analysts, and anyone else required to assure program success.


Job Requirements


  • Exceptional command of cloud native technologies, especially Kubernetes and other closely related technologies part of the CNCF landscape
  • Understanding of current and future microservice-oriented application design principles and the challenges inherent with that, with a strong desire to help solve those challenges and a vision for achieving that
  • Command of IT infrastructure and how cloud native applications consume it, and a deep understanding of how unique capabilities provided by that infrastructure might be exposed to applications to improve outcomes
  • High level of awareness of the communities surrounding those technologies, and an ability and willingness to establish and maintain a leadership role where necessary and appropriate
  • Ability to appropriately balance the needs of the business and our customers with the needs of the associated communities to assure mutual success
  • Provide and advocate for the future technical vision, and translate product requirements and challenges into a scalable and sustainable architecture in cooperation with senior engineers
  • Willingness and ability to solve both strategic and tactical execution challenges
  • Expert in software architecture and design, ideally service-oriented
  • Deep experience with the practical aspects of software development, including source control, continuous integration and delivery pipelines and principles, and Agile-like planning and execution methodologies
  • Strong command of both systems (especially Golang) and script (especially Python) programming
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, particularly presentation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions with strong influencing and leadership skills
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate extremely complex ideas in simple ways that are appropriate for the audience
  • Align product direction by successfully recognizing relevant technology and industry trends
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to senior technical staff members

Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years experience; or equivalent experience.
