Title:  Privacy and Data Governance Counsel

Job Summary

As Privacy and Data Governance Counsel you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and experienced team on privacy, compliance, and information security issues impacting NetApp’s employees, customers, products and business worldwide. You will report to the Senior Director, Compliance and Employment and work directly with a cross functional team dedicated to privacy on data privacy regulatory issues and compliance, as well as with business and engineering teams to design innovative privacy and security solutions for our customers and partners.

This role offers the opportunity to join an award winning Legal department and work directly with key members of the legal, HR, business, and engineering teams on a variety of cutting edge projects including: advancing a global data privacy and data governance program; advising on privacy and security by design reviews and projects; assist with data security incident response support; advise on privacy and security related matters in transactions and assist with drafting of policies and procedures surrounding privacy and security laws.

Job Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing legal advice concerning data privacy and security terms applicable to employee data, IT systems and IT service contracts, including Cloud services, vendor contracts and business partner agreements
  • Advising on the global data protection regulatory framework, including the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation
  • Partnering closely with and advising our HR, security, product and other business teams on privacy and data protection-related legal matters, including privacy by design
  • Evaluating the impact of U.S. and international legislative, regulatory, legal developments and industry guidelines involving privacy and security  
  • Participating in cross-functional company projects related to data protection and privacy by design
  •  Evolving NetApp’s global privacy program
  • Developing innovative solutions to address customer and partner needs

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience advising technology companies on data governance matters including data protection laws and their application to employee data, IT systems, IT service contracts, Cloud services and interest-based advertising
  • Understanding of the global data protection regulatory framework and the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation
  • Experience working with international clients, customers and partners
  • Track record of driving change initiatives and working cross-functionally

Education

 

  • J.D. and membership in at least one US state bar
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience, at a law firm or in-house
  • Experience with or knowledge of U.S. and international privacy and data protection laws, regulations and standards
  • Skilled in navigating complex, sensitive and nuanced issues in a logical and practical manner
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills 
  • A good sense of humor with an inquisitive mindset and passion for your work
