Job Summary

As a Professional Services Engineer, you will provide post-sales services and support for NetApp enterprise customers. Professional Services Engineers team with NetApp account teams and customers to understand customer requirements, scope appropriate services, and deliver service projects. Service projects include various aspects of project planning, project management, installations, requirements analysis, architecture/design, implementation, optimization, and on-going customer support processes.
NetApp will continue to evolve toward higher value-added solutions and Professional Services Engineers are integral to the success of these solutions. Solution examples are complex storage architectures to support mission critical applications such as database (MSSQL and Oracle), email systems (Exchange), and SAP. Solutions also include backup and restore, disaster recovery, storage consolidation, data protection, storage performance, cloud integration, etc.

Essential Functions:
The essential responsibilities of the Professional Services Engineer at this level are to provide leadership to other Professional Services team members and drive adoption of best practices in order to assist NetApp customers through on-site support and consulting services including:
•    Project planning for tasks of moderate to high complexity.
•    Project Management including building project plans and track scope, schedule and budget during deliver.
•    Installation and configuration of NetApp hardware and software products.
•    Requirements analysis including gathering technical details regarding customer’s environment.
•    Design expertise including the application of technical design practices to ensure the implementation will deliver desired results
•    Implementation of backup and restore, disaster recovery, storage consolidation, data protection, storage performance, etc.
•    Optimization including upgrades, performance monitoring and system audit tasks.
•    Customer support including troubleshooting and problem resolution. 
•    Influence customer requirements and drive NetApp solutions based on recognition that the Professional Services Engineer at this level is a recognized expert. 
•    Technical leadership to other technical team members.

 

This individual is a high-impact technical leader with demonstrated success leading complex projects. It is critical for this individual to be a technical expert with NetApp, IT infrastructure and applications and to understand the customers’ business requirements in order to relate these requirements to a proposed technical solution. Typical customer technical environments include:
•    Operating Systems: Unix and Windows systems administration functions including domain structures, file systems, disk partitions, mounts, quotas, and general security. 
•    Networking: Local area network technology, specifically Ethernet, IP, DNS and NIS associated daemons.  Network architectures include: hubs, repeaters, bridges, routers, and switches.
•    Storage:  SAN and NAS storage communications including caching and streaming technologies.
•    IT application environment: full spectrum of the technical environment from infrastructure through business applications.

 

Job Requirements


•    Excellent verbal and written communications skills are essential to impact senior and executive level technical teams, architects, systems administrators, and senior managers.
•    Ability to work collaboratively with other engineers and senior managers in a team environment in which to share best practices, meet aggressive goals, and meet high quality standards.
•    A technical leader and expert with demonstrated success on highly complex projects.
•    Ability to define and drive practices in the technical team and across the organization.
•    Ability to act as technical expert when working with customers’ senior technical representatives, including influencing customers’ requirements. 
•    Ability to understand the customers’ business requirements and relate their requirements to technical solutions. 
•    Must have direct experience in the following areas:
o    Windows: solid working knowledge of most recent versions. Understand share and NTFS security concepts.
o    Unix: good knowledge of Linux, and/or Unix system administration concepts including disk and network administration, NFS and NIS/NIS+ administration 
o    Networking: knowledge of Ethernet, IP, DNS and NIS associated daemons. Knowledge of standard and complex network architectures.
o    Storage: knowledge of storage administration and the concepts of file systems, disk partitions, mounts, quotas, mirroring and sizing. 
o    Expert knowledge of NAS, DAS, SAN (fabric attached architectures).
o    Expert with storage sizing, performance and high availability.
o    Deep experience with the internals of ONTAP fundamentals.
•    Up to 10% travel may be required.
•    Off hours work (nights and weekends) may be required, but normally standard 40-hour business hours.

Education

Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education/certifications/training and applicable professional experience.
•    DOD Security Clearance Required (Active Secret Required, TS Preferred).
